Chemical Peel Q & A
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a procedure used to improve the appearance and texture of the skin on your face. As a facial aesthetic procedure, your provider applies a chemical solution to your skin which helps to shed the surface layers of skin where fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging can show up. Different types of peels are available depending on your needs and aesthetic goals for skin rejuvenation.
How does a chemical peel work?
A chemical peel promotes the shedding of surface layers of skin by creating a mild chemical reaction on the surface of your skin. Your provider brushes thin layers of liquid chemicals onto your skin and then leaves the chemicals on your skin for a period of time to induce a chemical reaction. This chemical reaction signals your skin to begin peeling within 24-48 hours.
Different chemicals are used depending on the depth or strength of your peel, ranging from a mild mini-peel to a deep peel for more severe signs of aging. After your peel, the chemicals are rinsed from your skin to avoid further irritation and potential discomfort.
What happens during a chemical peel?
During your chemical peel, your provider begins by cleaning your skin and removing any makeup you’re wearing. Then they apply a numbing cream or gel to prevent discomfort while the chemicals are on your skin.
At Weight Loss and Vitality, the team uses chemical peel products from ZO® Skin Health. Your provider prepares your personalized chemical solution then gently brushes it onto your skin. The peel is left on your skin for 30-60 minutes then rinsed off completely.
You may feel a tingling sensation when the chemicals are applied. Mild redness is possible after removal of the peel. The entire procedure takes about one hour to complete.
What should I expect after a chemical peel?
After your chemical peel, your skin may be sensitive for about five or seven days, depending on the strength and depth of your peel. It’s best to wear sunscreen and avoid sun exposure as your skin peels. Within 24-48 hours, you’ll notice your skin drying out and flaking off as the peel takes effect. This can last 5-7 days until the surface layers of your skin have shed fully.
After your skin has healed fully, you’ll notice tighter, smoother skin overall.
